TORONTO – Canadian broadcast technology services provider Nextologies debuted a now award-winning new auto commercial detection (ACD) solution at NAB 2022 last month.
The solution “addresses a cumbersome challenge in the industry: how to do dynamic ad insertion without having SCTE because your playout does not support or have it,” a press release announcing the debut explains.
“The solution is a system that can analyze any live IP-based video stream and – in real time – detect and mark detected commercials with SCTE for downstream replacement, or can do the replacement on its own.”
There is significant revenue generating potential in incorporating addressable ads into linear streaming, however, any solution that makes it possible needs to be accurate and scalable, the release explains.
“The standard approach to resolve this problem is to use meta data (like SCTE 35/104 markers) to determine intervals and video information,” said Nextologies CEO Sasha Zivanovic, in the release.
“These markers are inserted into the video stream on the production level, and then ads can be replaced within the marked intervals. In the IP-based video stream, those markers don’t exist, but they will be required for downstream signal takers. So we developed a method to automatically identify the commercials and add SCTE where SCTE didn’t exist prior.”
In a separate press release last week, Nextologies announced its ACD solution – along with its NexToMeet and DaVinci/HITC products – were selected as winners at this year’s NAB Show Product of the Year Awards.
The ACD solution won in the asset management, automation, playout category, NexToMeet won in the remote production category and DaVinci/HITC won in the hardware infrastructure category.
“NexToMeet is an instant web/mobile to SDI video network accomplished by implementing custom video solutions, along with IP stream’s routing capability, to allow production teams to film interviews in any location with an iPhone or iPad webcam, then deliver that signal directly to SDI, no workarounds required,” the release explains.
“DaVinci/HITC is a combination of Nextologies’ proprietary algorithm “DaVinci” combined with HITC (Headend In The Cloud) to create the future of live and/or file based audio/video transport over any public network. DaVinci-powered HITC enables automated real time delivery of audio/video from anywhere to anywhere in the world, compensating for all forms of packet loss up to a hard disconnect (physical cut).”
