New area code 367 coming to eastern Quebec in November 2018

ST. JOHN'S – Ten-digit dialing is coming to Newfoundland and Labrador this summer to help meet a growing demand for new phone numbers.

Starting August 17, residents must dial area code 709 followed by the seven-digit phone number for all wireline and wireless local calls.   This dialing method allows for the introduction of the new area code 879 next year that will create millions of new phone numbers.

The Telecommunications Alliance, a group of major Canadian telecommunications companies, is leading a public awareness campaign to inform residents and business customers across the region about local 10-digit dialing.

The new area code 879 will be added starting November 24, 2018, joining the current 709 area code using the overlay method, meaning the two area codes will coexist and will cover the same geographic area.  All three-digit numbers, including 911 emergency service, will not require the inclusion of an area code.

In related news, the new area code 367 will be introduced in the eastern part of Quebec now served by the 418 and 581 area codes starting on November 24, 2018.  Other new area codes will also be introduced in the upcoming months in New Brunswick and British Columbia.
