New Telus-sponsored boards to donate $500,000 a year to local charities

CALGARY – Community initiatives in Calgary will receive an additional $500,000 boost from Telus each year thanks to the new Telus Calgary Community Board.

The Telus Calgary Community Board was announced today as part of a national philanthropic program that includes seven Telus Community Boards across Canada, said CEO Darren Entwistle. Charitable organizations are invited to apply for up to $20,000 in one-time funding for projects in the areas of health and wellness, education and sport, and arts and culture, with a focus on young Canadians and the innovative use of technology for the betterment of life in our communities.

The Telus Community Boards bring together community leaders and Telus employees to make decisions about local philanthropic initiatives, including donations to local charitable organizations and how Telus can help meet the crucial need for volunteers in the community.

The board has already donated $750,000 to 40 Calgary-based charities following its soft launch in 2005. Telus Community Boards have been established in Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Rimouski. The community boards enhance the company’s ongoing support of key charitable partners by expanding its investment in smaller, grassroots efforts.

Over the last six years, Telus and its employees have contributed $24 million to a variety of charities, organizations and local partnerships in Alberta.
