MONTREAL – Canadian cell phone subscribers looking to avoid paying early termination fees to cancel their contracts are getting some help from CellPlanDepot.com.
In anticipation of May’s wireless spectrum auction, which will introduce a fourth national wireless player, CellPlanDepot.com has launched an online service that helps cell phone subscribers get out of contracts without paying early termination fees. According to CellPlanDepot.com, early termination fees have nearly doubled in the last year, with penalties now ranging from $100 to as much as $700 per phone number.
“With the launch of new wireless technology such as Apple’s iPhone (which is still not available in Canada) there is no question that people want the freedom to switch carriers as they please,” said Shane Theriault, founder of CellPlanDepot.com. “If you’re moving, have a corporate plan, found a better plan or are simply dissatisfied with your cell phone company, you can turn to our service for a solution.”
CellPlanDepot.com pairs up people looking for short-term cell phone contracts with incentives – “Plan Seekers” – with people looking to drop their contracts – “Plan Droppers”. The Plan Seekers save on sign-up fees and can take advantage of incentives such as free cell phones and accessories, or even cash from members dropping their plans. In turn, Plan Droppers avoid the early termination fees.
There is no cost to become a member of CellPlanDepot.com, Theriault said. More information can be found at www.cellplandepot.com.
