New BCE committee to look at strategic alternatives

MONTREAL – The Bell Canada Enterprises board of directors said late Friday it has established a committee of independent directors to oversee the company’s evaluation of a range of strategic alternatives.

As has been repeatedly reported by just about every media outlet in the country, BCE is looking at at least two, if not three competing bids to take the massive telco private.

The formation of the new strategic oversight committee follows BCE’s announcement of April 17, 2007 of its intention to review these strategic alternatives "with a view to further enhance shareholder value," says the press release,

The committee is comprised of André Bérard, Thomas C. O’Neill, James A. (Jimmy) Pattison and Donna Soble Kaufman as its chair.

"No assurances can be provided that this review of alternatives will result in any specific action being taken by the company," says the release – although the business world will be shocked if nothing happens.
