OTTAWA – Ten-digit dialing is coming to New Brunswick as well as Newfoundland and Labrador by 2020, the CRTC announced Thursday.
The new area code 428 will provide relief for area code 506 in New Brunswick beginning November 21, 2020 using a distributed overlay, meaning the two area codes will coexist and will cover the same geographic area, reads the decision. Customers will be transitioned to 10-digit local dialing beginning August 13, 2020.
The Commission also approved the revised relief implementation plan for area code 709 in Newfoundland and Labrador, with an implementation date of May 20, 2022. Customers in that province will be transitioned to 10-digit local dialing beginning February 11, 2022 as part of the implementation of the distributed overlay of new area code 879.
