Telus invests $600,000 for coverage along Vancouver Island highway
COWICHAN VALLEY, B.C. – Telus announced today it has invested $600,000 to bring new wireless coverage to more than eight kilometers of the Island Highway between Shawnigan Mill Bay Road and Lakeside Road located on the southern part of Vancouver Island.
The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia agreement signed with the Province of B.C. in 2011. Under the terms of the agreement Telus will connect more than 1,700 kilometres of unconnected highways with wireless service.
This investment is also part of the $3 billion in infrastructure and facilities upgrades Telus is making across the province through 2014. Telus has already invested $29 billion in operations and technology throughout the B.C. since 2000.
MTS brings DSL high-speed internet to four rural Manitoba communities
WINNIPEG – MTS announced Thursday it has launched DSL-based high-speed Internet service in Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation, Fisher River Cree Nation, Brunkild, and Seven Sisters Falls.
In addition to these launches, MTS has launched DSL-based high-speed Internet services in eight other communities this year, including Falcon Lake, West Hawk Lake, Victoria Beach, Grand Beach, Wabowden, Poplar Point, Melrose, and Langruth. Eight more communities are slated to have this service before the end of the year.
When this latest expansion is complete, MTS will provide 215 communities across Manitoba with access to high-speed Internet services using a range of advanced technologies, including DSL, VDSL, fibre to the home, Wi-Fi hotspots and 4G HSPA/LTE wireless.
SaskTel bringing faster Internet service to 220 Saskatchewan Communities
REGINA – SaskTel announced earlier this week that it will be improving its DSL internet speeds in 220 new locations across Saskatchewan by the end of 2014.
The communities already have DSL service at 5 megabits per second (Mbps) but customers will have the choice to upgrade to a 10 Mbps plan that meets their needs. SaskTel currently provides DSL Internet access to 416 communities and First Nations.
The upgrade announcement is part of SaskTel’s rural strategy. Other initiatives include $10.7 million allocated to expand the coverage and capacity of SaskTel’s 4G wireless network, which includes 31 new towers and 37 network enhancements. As well, SaskTel plans to introduce a new LTE fixed-wireless produce to facilitate broadband access in rural locations pending results of a LTE-TDD fixed wireless trial underway and scheduled for completion this summer.
