TORONTO – Just ten months after launching its service in Canada, Netflix has surpassed one million members. The milestone was reached in July, when Amanda Bell James, from Flin Flon, Manitoba joined Netflix and won a lifetime membership to the Internet subscription service for movies and TV shows.
"We’re thrilled that Canadians have embraced Netflix so rapidly, and are we’re equally proud to have welcomed one million members in such a short period," said Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO and co-founder. "Our focus remains on building up the breadth and range of movies and TV shows to watch instantly, as well as constantly improving the experience, and we look forward to welcoming many more new members."
Early this month, U.S.-based Netflix announced it would be launching in Latin America as its second international market later this year. It says consumers in 43 countries across Mexico, South America and the Caribbean will soon be able to enjoy unlimited TV shows and movies streamed instantly over the Internet to their TVs and computers.
"As we said last quarter, we intend to launch our third international market in Q1 2012. Depending on content licensing discussions underway, we may launch one or more new countries in Q1," Netflix said in its letter to shareholders.
According to reports, Netflix’s third international market will likely be Europe, Asia, and/or Australia.
