Netflix for TV lovers, not cord cutters: MTM reports

OTTAWA – Streaming video isn’t just for PCs anymore and Netflix attracts TV lovers not cord cutters. The findings come from two new reports from Media Technology Monitor.

Streaming Video continues to grow in popularity with seemingly endless choices for all varieties of entertainment, says MTM. The fact that you can watch anytime, anywhere from any device has made streaming video one of the top internet activities among Canadians. The MTM says it draws on this popularity to outline the trends of streaming video and TV while examining the overall impact on traditional TV viewing.

Key findings from the Streaming Video report include:

  • Online video is becoming ubiquitous; three quarters of Anglophones watch online video
  • Online TV is growing in popularity; nearly two in five Anglophones watch TV online
  • The main screen for online viewing is still the computer, but other screens are increasing in popularity. One in five Anglophones are viewing online on mobile platforms which has seen significant increases over the past year
  • Time spent with online TV continues to grow; younger generations watch two or three times as much TV online as the older generations and women watch 50% more online TV than their male counterparts

The Rise of Netflix report has been updated with the most recent spring 2013 numbers. Key highlights include:

  • Netflix has been in Canada for three years and awareness in the English market is extremely high resulting in 25% of Anglophones subscribing
  • Even though Netflix is designed to be viewed on multiple platforms, two-thirds of total viewing is on a TV set
  • Netflix is for lovers of TV, not cord-cutters: most subscribe to TV, and also subscribe to premium pay TV in addition to Netflix

Both reports are now available to subscribers on the MTM website. MTM is the research arm of the CBC.
