Netflix Canada hires first Canadian content exec

TORONTO — Netflix Canada announced yesterday development executive and producer Tara Woodbury (above) has been hired as the company’s manager of Canada series.

This is the first Canadian content executive role at the company, according to a press release.

In this role, Woodbury will support the development and commissioning of scripted series in English and French for Netflix in Canada, “maintaining relationships with writers, directors and producers and identifying up and coming talent in the country,” the release says.

Woodbury is joining Netflix from her previous role at Sphère Média where she oversaw domestic and international development. She has also worked as executive producer of the CTV medical drama Transplant and produced Danis Goulet’s sci-fi thriller feature film Night Raiders.

Woodbury will start her new role at Netflix in mid-November, the release says. She will report to Danielle Woodrow, director of Canada series, and they will both work from Netflix’s new office in Toronto.

“Bringing global visibility to Canadian storytellers and their work was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Woodbury said in the press release. “I’m looking forward to joining Netflix and working with creators from across the country to discover new and compelling stories to share.”

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice-president of scripted series for the US-Canada (UCAN) region, said: “It’s no secret that the pool of creative talent in Canada runs deep. We’re confident that with Tara’s addition to the team we will increase our ability to work with new and established creators locally to bring even more Canadian stories to our members from around the world.”
