NETFLIX CANADA GAVE itself a hearty pat on the back Friday for what it described as “a busy first year” in its first permanent production presence outside of the United States.
In a self-congratulatory blog post, director of public policy Corie Wright said that Netflix is poised to surpass its promise to the Feds to invest $500 million in original Canadian content over five years, a move that she credited to the abundance of Canadian talent. (It’s worth noting, however, that $500M in spending over five years is just 6.25% of what Netflix says their total $8B content budget is just for this year.)
“Our experience has affirmed that Canada is home to some of the world’s best landscapes, creators and crews”, reads the post. “As a testament to that talent, we are pleased to announce that Netflix is on track to exceed our half billion dollar investment promise. This is because we continue to grow our business all over the world, and the quality of the shows and films we are making in Canada and other countries around the world are resonating with audiences everywhere.”
