National teleforum on 700 MHz public safety plan is next week

TORONTO – The Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance is holding an open national Teleforum with the lead advocates for the Canadian emergency services chiefs associations regarding Industry Canada’s Consultation on a Policy and Technical Framework for the 700 MHz Band and aspects related to commercial mobile spectrum.

The Teleforum will take place on Thursday, February 24 commencing at 1:30 p.m. EST and will be led by:

• Superintendent Pascal Rodier , Officer in Charge, South Fraser District, British Columbia Ambulance Service, representing the Emergency Medical Services Chiefs of Canada (EMSCC)
• Superintendent Bill Moore, Halifax Regional Police, Representing the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CAPC)
• Division Chief Mike Sullivan, Ottawa Fire Service, Representing the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC)

This Teleforum will provide an update on the campaign, reveal the current survey results being collected as part of the national consultation and ask participants through an open Q&A session to help answer some of the critical questions and concerns arising from this consultation, such as:

– If Public Safety is allotted the spectrum it is asking for, what are some of the business models industry would seek in helping them manage it?

– The public safety community is interested in partnering with industry to build, manage and operate such networks in partnership, not as a client (i.e., as owners, not renters). What terms and conditions, if enacted, do you feel would be fairest to the broadest range of ICT providers?

– What is the impact on this and similar issues in Canada given President Obama’s recent announcement on his government’s commitment to the National Wireless Initiative?

Register your interest in attending this Teleforum by Wednesday, February 23. There is no cost to participate, however donations are being requested to help offset the costs involved in undertaking this campaign.

Confirm your interest in participating in the Teleforum by contacting CATA VP of Research, Kevin Wennekes, at email "Kevin Wennekes" kwennekes@cata.ca with Broadband in the subject line. You will then be sent your call in number and supporting briefing notes.
