WASHINGTON DC – The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is spearheading a $1 billion education campaign through email to ensure consumers know that the switch to digital TV is less than a year away in the United States.
The association is asking people to participate in the campaign by forwarding an email with details about the digital switchover to all friends, family members and colleagues in their inbox address book. The campaign is aimed at ensuring no one loses “access to television when full-power TV goes all digital on February 17, 2009,” states the NAB.
Older TV sets do not have digital tuners and are not connected to cable, satellite or another pay TV service will need a converter box to continue to work.
Free over-the-air TV viewers can upgrade their TV sets in time for the transition by purchasing a new TV set with a digital tuner, buying a converter box for $40 to $70, or subscribing to cable or satellite TV.
The NAB tells Americans that the U.S. government is providing two coupons per household worth $40 each to be used for buying converter boxes. For details about the program, call 1-888-DTV-2009 or visit www.dtv2009.
