TORONTO – Doug Murphy officially assumed the role of president and CEO Corus Entertainment on Monday, replacing the retiring John Cassaday.

Murphy, pictured, joined Corus in 2003 and has held numerous senior management positions at the company, most recently as EVP and COO with responsibility for the company’s television and radio divisions.  Previously, he was EVP and president of Corus Television; EVP and GM of Corus Kids; and president of Nelvana and Nelvana Enterprises.  Before joining Corus, Murphy spent 10 years with the Walt Disney Company in a variety of senior executive positions in Canada, the United States and Japan.

As Cartt.ca reported, Cassaday said in January that he would retire from the company when his contract expired at the end of March after 25 years in broadcasting and 15 years as the only president and CEO Corus Entertainment has ever had.

“We want to thank John for his leadership and for helping to build Corus into the internationally respected and innovative media and entertainment company it is today,” said Corus’ executive chair Heather Shaw, in the announcement. “We are confident that Doug, who has been with Corus for over a decade, will continue to build on the company’s success going forward.”

Corus’ portfolio of multimedia offerings includes specialty and pay television, radio, children’s book publishing, children’s animation and animation software.
