MTS readies its EV-DO network

WINNIPEG – MTS will launch its new high speed wireless network this spring, the company announced this morning.

The EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) 3G wireless network will be turned on in Winnipeg and Brandon and the company says it will be the fastest wireless net in the province.

Customers will experience data download rates of up to 2.4 Mbps – with average speeds up to five times faster than currently available. "In business today, it’s important to spend more time with customers and less time at your desk," said Kelvin Shepherd, president of consumer markets for MTS Allstream Inc. "MTS’s 1xEV-DO technology will give you quicker access to better graphics, e-mail, corporate databases and other important features that will let you not only take your home or office with you, but ensure it keeps up with you."

In anticipation of the spring launch of this new service, MTS has introduced the first of many new 1xEV-DO capable hardware devices, such as the Kyocera Passport KPC650. A wireless PC Card compatible with MTS’s current digital wireless network, the KPC650 is available now at MTS Connect Stores and dealer locations.

Nortel is providing 1xEV-DO radio base stations, base station controllers and professional services to MTS. In addition, Nortel’s technology will support delivery of advanced services to MTS subscribers. MTS has also selected the Hatteras Networks HN400 customer premise platform, which will enhance the HN4000 Ethernet platforms already in use in MTS’s central offices. This equipment will provide the necessary connections between key components of MTS’s 1xEV-DO network.
