More Canadians are warming up to watching TV on tablets, smartphones: MTM report

OTTAWA – After years of hype, mobile and tablet TV is finally gaining some traction in Canada, according to a new report from the Media Technology Monitor.

MTM’s Spring 2013 Adoption Report found that 9% of Anglophone Canadians surveyed – or about 15% of smartphone owners –watch TV on their smartphone. Tablet owners are also embracing the video capabilities of their devices to watch TV, as 9% of Anglophones reported watching TV on a tablet, an increase of 50% from last fall, reads the report.

The new MTM report, which is based on telephone interviews conducted this spring among 4,000 Canadian adults – 2,000 Anglophones and 2,000 Francophones – offers a high level look at the penetration of technologies and activities, including traditional, Internet and mobile platforms for audio and video.

Other key findings from the report include:

* The move towards smartphones and tablets continues unabated. 60% of Anglophones have smartphones and a third have tablets;

* While few Canadians still watch TV online exclusively, 38% of Anglophones watch some TV online;

* Netflix is continuing to grow its market share – a quarter of Anglophones subscribe;

* Despite the buzz about interacting with TV shows via social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, only 9% of Anglophones are doing so;

* While penetration is still less than 10%, 3D TVs are starting to establish a foothold in the Anglophone market.  However, smart TVs are more popular;

* A new generation of game consoles is imminent, creating a transition time for gamers. The penetration of game consoles has been flat for the past 18 months.

The report is now available to subscribers on the MTM website. MTM is the research arm of the CBC.
