Mobilicity’s snow globe to help ease holiday blues with free phone calls

TORONTO – Torontonians this season can call loved ones across Canada and abroad for free, the catch is they have to get inside a giant 24-foot snow globe constructed by Mobilicity.

According to new research, the majority (62%) of Canadians miss their loved ones more around the holiday season. The survey, says Mobilicity, also found that 73% said if they can't be with friends or family over the holidays, hearing their voices over the telephone is the next best thing.

The City of Toronto estimates that half its population was born outside of Canada. In 2006, Toronto was home to 20% of all immigrants to Canada – resulting in over 140 languages and dialects being spoken in the city.  And, Citizenship and Immigration Canada estimates the number of foreign students in Toronto almost doubled from almost 14,000 in 2006 to over 25,000 in 2011 with the largest number of international students coming from China, India and Korea.

On Friday, December 21, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Yonge-Dundas Square, across from Toronto Eaton Centre, Mobilicity Chief Customer Officer Anthony Booth will open the door to the snow globe along with international students. The opening is set to trigger snow to fall inside the giant globe where international students unable to go home for the holidays will be lining up to make free long-distance calls to their loved ones abroad. The globe will be operational from 11:30 am – 8 pm on Dec. 21 and 9:30 am – 7:30 pm the following day.

Other visuals will include a holiday 'wish tree' and a real-life reindeer. The stars of the popular Canadian multicultural TV show Mangoes will complete the festive vignette inside the globe as they call their loved ones overseas to share holiday greetings.
