TORONTO – New wireless entrant Mobilicity has signed a five-year contract with Ericsson to manage its soon-to-be-launched 3G network.
The Swedish telecom equipment-maker will handle the “day-to-day network operations” as well as be responsible for front-and-back-office operations and field maintenance in Mobilicity’s new network, the companies announced Tuesday.
"There’s a huge benefit in having Ericsson monitor and maintain our state-of-the-art 3G network," said Mobilicity president and CEO Dave Dobbin, in the announcement. "No one knows how to run a network better than Ericsson. And, as a low-cost mobile operator, it makes a lot of sense to partner with best-in-class providers who can deliver significant cost-efficiencies and allow us to focus on our customers."
The announcement marks Ericsson’s first managed network operations contract in Canada, and its second major contract in North America. Ericsson also designed and built Mobilicity’s 3G network.
Mobilicty said that it will launch in Toronto this Spring, followed by Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa.
