Cable / Telecom News

Merry Christmas to all, and to all an excellent 2012!

WE’LL CONTINUE TO cover industry news as it happens on Cartt.ca over the next two weeks, but our newsletters are taking a holiday break. Today's edition will be the final regular newsletter until January 10th as those of us at Cartt.ca pause to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.

If there's REALLY BIG news over the holidays, we'll be on it of course, but the whole industry gets a bit quiet between now and the back-to-school week, so that’s when we schedule our break, too.

We'll be pretty busy right away in the new year as Cartt.ca consumer electronics editor John Bugailiskis will once again be on the floor at the world's largest consumer electronics expo, the International CES show, from January 9 to 13, filing daily reports, so look for some special alerts that week. His focus, as it is every year, will be on technology that will directly affect the cable, radio, television and telecom business.

In February is the annual CFTPA Prime Time conference in Ottawa while March will see the SCTE Canadian Summit, of which Cartt.ca is the media sponsor and sponsor of the Canadian Engineer of the Year Award.

It looks to be a very busy 2012 in Ottawa, too, as we’ll see the naming of a new CRTC chairman (many expect vice-chair telecom Len Katz to be interim chair for some months), the release of the 700 MHz wireless spectrum auction rules, and perhaps some news on what’s in store for the CBC budget. There will be hearings into new radio stations in Calgary and a new FM in Toronto, too, among many other items.

As well, watch for our popular Cartt.ca IN-DEPTH and Cartt.ca INVESTIGATES publications to continue through 2012 – and maybe even for some additional new wrinkles from us, too. And we haven’t forgotten how our industry lags the rest of the world in getting broadband to low income families, something some of us have dubbed Canadian Broadband For All (#cdnbb4all). That will be a major story for Cartt.ca in the new year.

So, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or best wishes for whatever goodwill celebration you may hold dear at this time of year.

And to all of our readers and advertisers, we thank you so much for your support throughout 2011, all the best in 2012 and good luck with your New Year's resolutions.

And now, thinking of how the Red Baron and Snoopy put aside their differences in the name of the season for a holiday toast, we give you 50 silly Christmas seconds featuring a few gentlemen you’ll all recognize, sharing a holiday dance.
