MELS unveils new virtual production stage

MONTREAL – TVA Group’s MELS Studios and Postproduction division today announced the unveiling of a new 10,000 square-foot virtual production stage with a motorized movable ceiling (pictured above).

The virtual stage is an integrated platform, providing a complete virtual production solution. “All services – special effects, camera, lighting, postproduction, tech – are linked by fibre optics to all the sets to provide a turnkey solution that combines agility, effectiveness and creative latitude,” a press release explains. The stage can be configured according to the needs of projects of different sizes.

“Our new virtual stage will let us take our know-how to the next level and apply our advanced expertise to continue developing our services for major local and foreign projects,” said Richard Cormier, executive producer, virtual production at MELS, in the release.

MELS began to shift to digital in 2020 when it launched a virtual production stage with an LED-screen backdrop. Over the last year, MELS has been part of virtual production projects including Transformer 7, Disappointment Blvd., Nissan, Loto-Québec, The Moodys, Lignes de fuite, Arlette!, Le Trois Accords, Five Roses, Survival, Via Mare and more.

“This significant spend supports the technological shift we began a year ago and keeps MELS at the head of the pack in the industry,” said Martin Carrier, president of MELS. “Our innovative virtual platform will enable us to keep offering local creators and major international players the very best technology.”
