OTTAWA – Matthew Boswell has been appointed commissioner of competition for a five-year term after serving as its interim commissioner since May 2018.

Boswell first joined the Bureau in January 2011 and became senior deputy commissioner the following year where he led numerous merger reviews and directed major investigations targeting criminal cartels, abuse of dominance and deceptive marketing practices.  In 2017, he began a one-year assignment as senior deputy commissioner, mergers and monopolistic practices.

Before joining the Bureau, he was senior litigation counsel in the enforcement branch at the Ontario Securities Commission, and also worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto.

“I congratulate Matthew Boswell on his appointment”, said Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, in Tuesday’s announcement.  “Mr. Boswell has the important role of leading a team working hard to promote and defend an open and fair marketplace for all Canadians. I know that he will continue to serve with the same dedication he has demonstrated these past nine months as interim commissioner.”

Part of the Innovation, Science and Economic Development portfolio, the Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act (except as it relates to food), the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act.
