Majority of Canadians support emergency funding of news, says Friends


TORONTO — With the news media suffering financially due to Covid-19, almost two-thirds (62%) of Canadians say the federal government should treat the current media crisis as an emergency, according to a new survey conducted by Nanos Research on behalf of the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting. According to the survey results, released Monday morning, 26% of Canadians agree and 36% somewhat agree that because of the Covid-19 outbreak the federal government should treat widespread media bankruptcies and layoffs as an emergency because professional journalism is essential to keeping Canadians safe.
