Macrovision to buy Gemstar-TV Guide

SANTA CLARA and LOS ANGELES – Content management software company Macrovision announced Friday it intends to purchase Gemstar-TV Guide International, owners of the patents and technology behind much of the installed base of electronic program guides available on cable set top boxes, for US$2.8 billion in cash and stock.
