MARKHAM, Ont. — The challenges faced by Canada’s broadcasters — local media organizations in particular — and how government can help them to compete will be the subject of a Bell-sponsored keynote at next week’s virtual Canadian Telecom Summit.
Scheduled for Thursday, November 19 from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET, the keynote “Canadian Media at a Crossroads: How Local Can and Must Thrive in a Global Future” will be delivered by Nikki Moffat, Bell Media’s president of radio and local TV and senior vice-president of finance.
Presenting an urgent call to action, Moffat will discuss the juxtaposition between the Canadian community-building that local media delivers and the substantial international challenges it faces.
“Current trends paint a stark picture of a future in media in which global tech behemoths out-spend, out-scale and eventually choke homegrown offerings,” reads the keynote description. “With a discussion of the government’s role in enabling Canadian media businesses to compete, this session will deliver a vision of what’s now, what’s next, and how a fairer future is needed for local TV and radio to survive.”
The virtual Canadian Telecom Summit will run from November 17 to 19.
