Liberian contract sets Rogers milestone

TORONTO – Rogers Wireless customers can now find their wireless handsets work in 200 countries.

The company reached this 200-country milestone on July 24th, with a newly-signed roaming agreement between Rogers Wireless and the mobile operator, Comium Liberia Inc. in the African nation of Liberia. Rogers has over 500 roaming partners worldwide.

As Canada’s only GSM carrier, Rogers is leading the way among Canadian wireless carriers when it comes to offering the most international voice and data roaming destinations with a selection of 52 world phones. (With the notable exception of Apple’s iPhone, where rumour-mongers are predicting Rogers will have in time for the Christmas selling season.)

Most of the world (approximately 80% of global wireless customers) use GSM technology. However North American companies like Sprint, Bell and Telus, do not, instead favouring CDMA.

"Our significant investment in the world-standard GSM technology six years ago has served our customers well," said John Boynton, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer, in a press release. "Now, if you’re one of the seven million customers who have chosen Rogers Wireless or Fido, you can voice roam in 200 countries – the most of any Canadian carrier."

Since the launch of Rogers’ GSM network in July 2001, the GSM subscriber base worldwide has exploded from 500 million to more than 2.5 billion, according to the Rogers release.
