TORONTO – Women in Film and Television-Toronto (WIFT-T) announced Tuesday that Métis filmmaker, actor, and human rights activist Michelle Latimer is the winner of the 2008 Astral Media Mentorship Award.
The winner receives an intensive pre-festival mentorship with a senior Astral Media executive and the opportunity to pitch and network at the Banff World Television Festival. Throughout the festival, the winner is given one-on-one coaching to help her bring her concept from script to screen.
“Astral Media is thrilled at the number and calibre of applications that were submitted for the Astral Media Mentorship Award,” said Michelle Marion, director of original production for Astral Media’s The Movie Network and juror on the Astral Media Mentorship Award selection committee. “In the end, we chose an emerging producer who possesses the talent and potential that represents exactly what this program is designed for and we look forward to seeing how this program benefits her in her future endeavours.”
Latimer was recently nominated for the Don Haig Award (2008) for her contributions as an emerging filmmaker, and has been featured as a humanitarian and artist to watch on APTN’s 7th Generation.
She is currently producing the documentary Jackpot and developing a television series, as well as a short documentary about Aboriginal youth artists.
Michelle will receive the Astral Media Mentorship Award at the 2008 Crystal Awards Gala Luncheon on December 1, 2008 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
