Kevin Frankish steps in as interim host of 640 Toronto morning show

Starting Wednesday, veteran broadcaster Kevin Frankish will host 640 Toronto’s weekday morning show, Toronto Today, while current host Greg Brady steps away from the microphone to run for office in the upcoming federal election.

“I’ve made a big decision to seek the House of Commons seat in the riding of Ajax as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada,” Brady said in a Corus Radio press release. “As such, ethically, and practically, the right thing is to take a leave of absence from the 640 Toronto airwaves. My colleagues and the listeners mean the world to me, and I will still be on your team, your side, and rooting for great things, as hopefully you are for me.”

Corus said Frankish’s temporary gig as host of Toronto Today with Kevin Frankish, airing weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET, will provide listeners “with insightful and timely coverage during this crucial election period.”

A seasoned broadcaster with extensive experience in breaking news and politics, Frankish is best known for his 27 years as co-host of Breakfast Television before his departure from the Rogers Sports and Media morning show in 2018.

“Kevin Frankish is a decorated Canadian broadcaster with a distinguished career and numerous accolades, including being named Top TV Personality on 10 occasions,” Corus’s press release said. “In 2012, he was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to both broadcasting and community service.”

Mike Bendixen, Corus’s national director of talk radio, said the addition of Frankish is “part of Corus Radio’s continued commitment to bringing listeners the best original, Canadian content, delivered by exceptional talent.”

“I’m thrilled to be joining the team at 640 Toronto — a powerful place for important conversations,” Frankish said in a statement. “Every morning, I am going to do my best in trying to help you make sense of what is becoming an increasingly senseless world. I will be asking the questions of newsmakers, and demanding the answers I know that you want, however, I will always try to send you off into your day in a positive way.”

Frankish’s hiring as interim host of 640 Toronto’s Toronto Today comes as his former Breakfast Television co-host Dina Pugliese returns to BT as co-host and co-executive producer.
