Katz named Telecom vice chair


GATINEAU – It’s been a bit of an open secret in Ottawa but today it was made official, Len Katz is the new vice-chair (Telecommunications) at the CRTC.

Also announced today was Peter Menzies’ appointment as a part-time member to the CRTC.

"I am pleased that both Mr. Katz and Mr. Menzies have agreed to join the CRTC," said Heritage Minister Josée Verner in the official release. "Their vast knowledge and experience will play an important role in helping the CRTC carry out its mandate."

Katz (whom Cartt.ca profiled here) has been executive director, broadcasting and telecom at the CRTC since 2005. He was mandated to improve the responsiveness and re-engineer the broadcasting and telecom sector in light of the changing competitive landscape, while maintaining the quality and transparency inherent to the CRTC process.

He has more than 25 years of experience with well-known telecommunications businesses. From 1974 to 1985, he served in several capacities at Bell Canada, including as assistant director of policy development. From 1985 to 2002, he worked at Rogers Communications, rising to president of Rogers Business Solutions. Mr. Katz holds a Master of Business Administration degree from McGill University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Sir George Williams University.

Menzies has spent his career in the newspaper business, notably as publisher and general manager of the Calgary Herald from 2003 to 2006 and editor-in-chief from 1999 to 2003. He serves on the boards of Theatre Calgary, the Calgary Opera, and the Midnapore Hockey Association. He graduated from Acadia University in Nova Scotia and studied journalism at the University of Victoria.
