IPTV has its work cut out, says report

IPTV SUBSCRIPTION WILL be quick, but not particularly profitable in the short term, according to a new report from European research firm Informa Telecoms and Media.

IPTV: A Global Analysis predicts that there will be 57 million IPTV homes globally by 2013, but that will be only 4% of the world’s TV households by then. In fact, only 14 countries will have more than a million IPTV subs by that time.

"This fairly limited penetration comes from having to migrate subscribers away from long-established cable and DTH services, as well as the impact of (digital terrestrial television) to a lesser extent. However, there are examples of IPTV gaining a foothold even in the most competitive markets,” says Simon Murray, the report’s author.

Much of the future growth is expected to be in Asia Pacific, contributing 22.2 million of the 57 million global total by 2010. China alone will have crossed the 10 million mark, with the U.S. not far behind.
