Inuit TV to air CBC News Igalaaq in partnership to broaden reach

CBC/Radio-Canada announced Thursday that it will provide Inuit TV with the rights to air CBC News: Igalaaq to broaden the reach of its broadcast and preserve and promote Inuit languages.

The public broadcaster expects the rights will “increase access and reach of CBC’s Inuktitut-language supper-hour news broadcast to new audiences,” it said in a release.

The program will air on Inuit TV, the Nunvaut government’s educational broadcaster focused on Inuit culture and language, starting April 3, 2024 at 1 pm EST and repeat at 5:30 pm from Tuesday to Saturday.

The program normally runs live each weekday at 6 pm EST from Iqaluit, Nunavut and is available on CBC Gem, CBC.ca/north, and on the CBC North YouTube channel.

“This will bring Igalaaq into a few communities where CBC’s signal doesn’t currently reach,” Eva Michael, host of CBC News: Igalaaq, said in a release.

“Inuit TV plays an integral role in strengthening our Inuktut language and this agreement will help to reach our 80% Inuktut programming goal,” Lucy Qavavauq, Co-CEO of Inuit TV, added in the release.

Inuit TV launched in May 2022 and is available on Shaw Direct Channel 268, Bell Satellite Channel 264, Arctic Co-Op Digital Cable Channel 241 and TELUS Optik TV Channel 113.
