Industry Canada awards residual spectrum licences

OTTAWA – BroadPoint International Telecom scooped up six of the ten spectrum licences in Industry Canada’s recent auction of residual spectrum licences in the 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz Bands.

The Richmond Hill, ON-based company submitted the highest bids for spectrum licences covering approximately 167,000 people in various locations in Quebec and in Thomspon, MB.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association told Cartt.ca in an email that the spectrum is primarily for fixed wireless, such as Wireless Communications Services (WCS) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA).

According to the Industry Canada website, WCS licensees in the 2300 MHz band may deploy a full range of terminal devices including broadband point-to-point, though WCS will most likely be used predominantly for local broadband access services in point-to-multipoint configurations.

FWA licensees in the 3500 MHz band may deploy a full range of fixed applications (i.e. point-to-multipoint/point-to-point) in support of fixed wireless access applications, including ancillary portable terminals.

Other spectrum winners were Monophone Inc. for Strathroy, ON; 768812 Ontario Inc. for Fort Frances, ON; I-NetLink Inc. for Creighton/Flin Flon, MB; and SSI Micro Ltd. for Nunavut.
