Ina Fichman elected chair of DOC board

TORONTO — The Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC) announced Tuesday long-time DOC member Ina Fichman (pictured) is stepping into the role of chair of DOC’s board of directors.

Fichman was elected as chair at the board’s last meeting, held on Friday, May 8. She takes over the role from Nadine Pequeneza, whose three-year term is coming to an end.

Fichman has a long history of involvement with DOC, mainly with the Quebec chapter of the organization, where she served as co-chair more than 15 years ago. More recently, she has been on the DOC Quebec board for more than two years, and has been involved with DOC’s advocacy committee for three years. Fichman joined the DOC board of directors as the DOC Quebec and advocacy committee representative in November 2019.

For 25 years, Fichman has been producing award-winning documentary and fiction films for television and theatrical release, as well as digital projects. She has worked with first-time and established directors in Canada and around the world on projects such as Undying Love, The Wanted 18, Monsoon, Laila at the Bridge and The Oslo Diaries. She helms the production company Intuitive Pictures, and in 2018 she was the recipient of the Don Haig Award for outstanding achievement in documentary filmmaking.

“It is an honour to chair the board of directors of the Documentary Organization of Canada. During these difficult times, we need community more than ever. DOC has the capacity to play a vital role in supporting the talented documentary filmmakers in Canada to ensure a sustainable, vibrant future. I look forward to this challenge,” said Fichman, in the news release.

DOC is the collective voice of independent documentary filmmakers across Canada. The national non-profit association represents more than 800 directors, producers and craftspeople in the Canadian documentary community.
