TORONTO – Yesterday was World Statistics Day (no, really!) and in honour of that, Toronto’s Solutions Research Group put together some Canadian figures about viewers of the big, smaller and really small screens.
TV watching is still very popular among Canadians, most of whom have a subscription of some sort in order to get to their favourite content. But all those other screens mean we are doing many other things besides watching TV (or at the same time as the tube, er plasma or LCD, is on).
The Big Screen
• Number of hours average Canadian spends with TV (weekly): 28
• Percentage of Canadian households with a TV subscription (cable, satellite, telcoTV): 91%
• Average number of TVs in a Canadian household: 2.6
• The average size of the main TV: 37.6”
• The average age of the main TV: 3.9 years old
• Percentage of main TVs in Canadian households that are HDTV capable: 54%
• Percentage of Canadians multitasking as they watch TV: 58%
• Most common multitasking activity: using a PC/laptop (51%)
• Percentage of main TVs to which a game console is attached sometimes/always: 45%
• Percentage of main TVs to which a laptop is attached sometimes/always: 21%
Smaller Screen
• Percentage of Canadians using Internet from any of home, work, school or other: 82%
• Number of hours average Canadian spends using a PC (weekly): 23
• Number of PCs in an average Canadian household: 2.1
• Percentage of Canadian Internet users with a laptop: 61%
• Percentage of Canadian Internet users with an MP3 Player/iPod: 59%
• Percentage of Canadian Internet users who: visited Facebook last month: 75%; visited YouTube last month: 71%; watched a TV show online: 31%; used Twitter last month: 19%
Smallest Screen
• Percentage of Canadian households with at least one mobile phone: 75%
• Percentage of Canadian mobile phones which are smartphones: 32%
• Percentage of mobile phone users who: texted with their mobile phones in the last month: 65%; took a photo with it: 59%
• Percentage of mobile users 12-29 who watched a video clip on their phone: 41%
• Percentage of mobile users 50+ who watched a video clip on their phone: 7%
