IBM, HP, move solidly into IPTV space

PARIS – Alcatel and Microsoft Corp. announced this week they will use server systems technology from both HP and IBM to deliver solutions for carrier-class triple play/Internet protocol television (IPTV) deployments.

This announcement, combined with the existing OEM agreements between Alcatel the two server companies, solidifies IBM and HP as key members of the joint Alcatel-Microsoft IPTV ecosystem. As a result, Alcatel and Microsoft will work together with HP and IBM to deliver these advanced systems to carriers deploying triple play service offerings.

In Canada, Telus and Bell Canada, as well as Aliant, are either rolling out – or will soon launch – IPTV.

"The combination of Alcatel’s network access experience, IBM’s proven server solutions and Microsoft’s software expertise and comprehensive IPTV Edition software platform is expected to speed time to market for IPTV services while improving system performance and architecture scalability for telecommunications service providers," says the press release. (The release about HP said the same thing, with "HP" in place of "IBM".)

"In addition, with the pre-investment in performance testing and integration, the co-operation also has the potential to improve performance and lower CAPEX for service providers," adds the release.
