Huawei to invest $3M in University of Waterloo research projects

SHENZHEN, CHINA – Huawei and the University of Waterloo have struck a strategic research partnership agreement that will see the company invest $3 million to further develop research projects with the University over the next three years.

The agreement, announced Monday during the U of W’s president and vice-chancellor Feridun Hamdullahpur’s visit to the company’s global operations headquarters in Shenzhen, will establish a framework for partnerships in a wide range of R&D initiatives, including cloud computing, next generation communications, data management and data analytics, reads the news release.

It builds on a number of ongoing research initiatives in 5G-related project areas between Huawei and U of W, and will help to further build a base of skilled students able to ensure Canada's competitiveness in leading-edge communications technology initiatives.

"This is an exciting day for Huawei's R&D collaborations as we join together with the University of Waterloo", said Huawei Canada president Sean Yang, in the release. "The University of Waterloo is one of the world's leading research institutions, and this partnership reflects our long-term commitment to Canada, and the thriving ICT ecosystem in the Waterloo Region."
