VANCOUVER — After a B.C. Supreme Court ruling earlier today that said extradition proceedings against Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou can continue, Huawei Canada issued a statement regarding the case this afternoon.
“Huawei is disappointed in the ruling today by the Supreme Court of British Columbia. We have repeatedly expressed confidence in Ms. Meng’s innocence. Huawei continues to stand with Ms. Meng in her pursuit for justice and freedom,” reads the statement.
Meng is the chief financial officer of the Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer and is facing fraud charges in the United States, which has requested her extradition from Canada. The fraud charges stem from allegations Meng deceived banks about Huawei’s relationship with a company doing business in Iran, leading to transactions that allegedly violated U.S. economic sanctions against the Middle Eastern country.
“We expect that Canada’s judicial system will ultimately prove Ms. Meng’s innocence. Ms. Meng’s lawyers will continue to work tirelessly to see justice is served,” concludes the statement.
Meanwhile, the telecom industry in Canada is still awaiting the federal government’s decision on whether or not Huawei equipment can be used in the country’s 5G networks.
Telus is already a Huawei customer and has said previously it will use Huawei telecom equipment for its 5G infrastructure outside of its core network.
