Huawei launches its Petal Search in Canada

MARKHAM, Ont. — Huawei smartphone users in Canada now have a new way to access mobile apps with the launch today of Huawei’s new Petal Search tool.

Available for download from AppGallery on Huawei devices, the search tool offers an open gateway to download and update a million apps, as well as easily search for news, images and more, all directly from the home screen of the device.

Petal Search is now one of three ways in which Huawei users can find, download and update apps onto their Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) devices, alongside AppGallery and Huawei’s Phone Clone app. AppGallery is Huawei’s official app store with more than 420 million monthly active users and a growing list of apps. Huawei’s AppGallery is integrated into the Petal Search widget and any apps already available in the AppGallery will appear at the top of any search in the new tool. Hundreds of new apps continue to be added to the AppGallery every week, says the news release.

Petal Search was created in partnership with global search engine providers, including Bing, Qwant and Yandex. Huawei had to create the new service when the U.S. government banned American companies, like Google, from working with or providing technology to the Chinese tech company. That means Android could no longer be an operating system on Huawei phones, among many other things.

Petal Search currently supports more than 40 languages and is available in 45 countries and regions, with plans for wider rollout to more countries in the future. The search tool is available for current Huawei devices, including the Huawei P40 Series 5G, now available in Canada from Bell, Telus, Videotron, SaskTel, Koodo, Virgin Mobile, The Mobile Shop, The Source and Visions Electronics.
