Hollywood Suite’s new original doc premieres May 29

TORONTO — Hollywood Suite announced today its original documentary Raising the Dead: Re-examining Night of the Living Dead is set to make its world broadcast premiere on May 29.

Directed by Ryan Mains, the documentary is an homage to George A. Romero’s ’60s horror classic, Night of the Living Dead, and features reflections from original cast and crew on the film which revolutionized the zombie-horror genre.

The documentary will premiere on the Hollywood Suite 70s Movies channel on May 29 at 9 p.m. ET, and will be immediately followed by a double-header of Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) at 9:40 p.m. ET and Dawn of the Dead (1978) at 11:20 p.m. ET. The documentary is also available, in colour and in a special black-and-white monochrome edition, On Demand, on the Hollywood Suite GO app and on HSGO.ca.

Featuring new interviews with original cast and crew, archival footage and commentary from a diverse lineup of film experts, Raising the Dead takes viewers back to 1968 to see how an unlikely movie rewrote the rules of filmmaking and held a mirror up to a society in turmoil, says the news release.

“I wanted to dive into the film that set the template for the zombie genre and discover what gives this low-budget film such a cult-following and staying power,” said Ryan Mains, the documentary’s director and producer, in the news release. “Bringing together the crew’s behind-the-scenes stories and modern film authorities’ analysis, has expanded my respect and admiration for the film and its filmmaker.”

Raising the Dead: Re-examining Night of the Living Dead is part of an ongoing project by Hollywood Suite to create immersive, multiplatform content that explores the way film impacts individuals, and culture as a whole. A number of elements support the project, including virtual reality and 360° video experiences of Night of the Living Dead, numerous original short-form pieces available online and on the HSGO app and HSGO.ca. The project is funded in part by the Canada Media Fund.
