
TORONTO — Hollywood Suite announced today its channels will present a selection of iconic Canadian director Norman Jewison’s acclaimed films Nov. 19-21.
Each night, Hollywood Suite will air two of Jewison’s films, with all of the titles available on Hollywood Suite On Demand all month long.
“Norman Jewison (above) is among Canada’s most celebrated filmmakers. His movies are timeless and display remarkable range,” said Sharon Stevens, vice-president of programming at Hollywood Suite, in a press release. “We are honoured to have the opportunity to showcase a selection of his films this month.”
First up on Nov. 19 is political satire The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966) at 9 p.m. ET on Hollywood Suite’s 70s channel, followed by the groundbreaking film In the Heat of the Night (1967) starring Sidney Poitier at 11:10 p.m. ET, on the same channel.
On Nov. 20, Hollywood Suite’s 80s channel will feature Best Friends (1982) starring Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn at 9 p.m. ET, followed by military crime drama A Soldier’s Story (1984) at 10:55 p.m. ET.
On Nov. 21, viewers can see Moonstruck (1987) starring Oscar-winning actress Cher at 9 p.m. ET on the 80s channel, then switch to the 90s channel for romantic comedy Only You (1994) starring Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei at 10:45 p.m. ET.
Over his career as a director and producer, Jewison’s films have earned 45 Oscar nominations, resulting in 12 wins. He received the Academy’s Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1999. He has also received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, as well as stars on both the Canada and Hollywood Walks of Fame.
Among other notable achievements, Jewison established the renowned Canadian Film Centre in 1988. This year, Jewison’s varied career and life was profiled in Ira Wells’s biography Norman Jewison: A Director’s Life.
In its press release, Hollywood Suite says when Jewison was asked what he hopes the next generation of filmmakers will take from his work, he said: “I hope (they) will have the courage to tell truthful stories…Stories that are believable. Stories that have a strong impact on their audiences worldwide because the ‘truth’ of the human condition is universal.”
