TORONTO – CBC’s day-long celebration of our national game this Saturday will be a bit more inclusive this year as select games will be made available online in Mandarin, Hindi and Cantonese at cbcsports.ca.
CBC’s eighth annual Hockey Day In Canada gets underway on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 12 noon ET / 11 a.m. CT, as Ron MacLean goes rinkside, live from the Winkler Recreation Complex in Winkler, Man. Also in Winkler: Don Cherry, Cassie Campbell, Scott Morrison and Dick Irvin, while CBC personalities report from satellite locations across the country, including Duncan, B.C.; Black Diamond, Alta.; Cochrane, Ont.; Ottawa, Ont.; Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.; and New Glasgow, N.S.
Headlined by a full day of action featuring all of Canada’s NHL teams, the day will also feature the first-ever Mandarin, Hindi and Cantonese language broadcasts, available exclusively at cbcsports.ca.
“CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada is a chance for all Canadians to celebrate the game,” said Joel Darling, director of production, CBC Sports, in a press release. “In that spirit, this is an exciting and unique opportunity for us to celebrate and introduce the game to new audiences. cbcsports.ca provides us with an ideal platform to provide additional language options.”
The multi-language options will be available live and on-demand, online exclusively at cbcsports.ca. At 3 p.m. ET, the game featuring Detroit at Toronto will be available in Mandarin, with University of Toronto students Yutong Zaho and Zhen Jiang calling the game. At 7 p.m. ET, the game between Montreal and Ottawa will be available in Hindi with Priya Sharma, a Sheridan College Broadcast Journalism Post-Graduate Student, along with Sapna Singh, also from Sheridan College, calling the action. And at 10 p.m. ET, the game between Colorado and Vancouver will be available online in Cantonese, with Alex Chum of Omni Television handling the play-by-play alongside Bill Tang
