HNIC season opener reaches 9.8M Canadians

TORONTO – Hockey Night in Canada set a record for audience reach on the opening Saturday in October of the 2014-15 NHL season.

Rogers said that 9.8 million Canadians tuned into some or all of the new look  Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, while the debut of Rogers Hometown Hockey (Toronto @ New York Rangers) Sunday on City averaged an audience of 1.07 million viewers, the third most-watched Sunday broadcast in City history.

Saturday’s Game One average audience (7 PM ET / 4 PM PT) (Pittsburgh @ Toronto; Montreal @ Philadelphia; Ottawa @ Tampa Bay; Calgary @ St. Louis; Washington @ Boston) was 2.23 million viewers, while the Game Two average audience (10 PM ET / 7 PM PT) (Edmonton @ Vancouver; Winnipeg @ San Jose) was 1.31 million viewers.

“Seeing Canadians connecting with their game across so many platforms, and engaging with us in so many ways, is a great way to kick off the season for Hockey Night in Canada and Rogers Hometown Hockey,” said Scott Moore, Rogers Media president of Sportsnet & NHL Properties, in the news release.  “We’re off to a strong start, and are looking forward to reaching more Canadians than ever before throughout the season.”
