NEW YORK and TORONTO – Shaw Media’s History has picked up a 10 episode third season of the acclaimed drama series Vikings, the network announced Tuesday.

The renewal comes just four episodes into the series’ second season.  Six new episodes remain in this season, which airs Thursdays at 10:00 PM ET/PT, and the season finale is scheduled for Thursday, May 1.

Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok, the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the saga of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods: legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors.

Created and written by Michael Hirst, Vikings is an international Irish/Canadian co-production being co-produced by Canada's Take 5 Productions and Ireland's World 2000, in association with Shaw Media.  MGM Television brings Vikings to global audiences, serving as the worldwide distributor outside of Ireland and Canada.  History broadcasts both domestically in Canada and in the U.S.

"With top Canadian talent both in front of and behind the camera, it's gratifying that Vikings has become must-see television for Canadian audiences," said Barbara Williams, Shaw Media’s SVP of content, in the news release.  "We can't wait to bring viewers a third season, and to give this first-class creative team the opportunity to further explore the richly drawn characters and complex relationships that remain at the heart of the series."

Production on season three will begin this summer and air in 2015.
