TORONTO — Bell Media’s said today its Harold Greenberg Fund is awarding a total of $151,000 to five short film projects through its Shorts-to-Features Program and the HGF/Newfoundland and Labrador Shorts Program.

Three projects are set to receive production and development funds through the Shorts-to-Features Program, which is designed to help up-and-coming Canadian filmmaking talent to further develop their short films into full-length features.

This year’s chosen films for the Shorts-to-Features Program are: Kiskosimakan (aka Whistling) from writer/director Thirza Cuthand and producer Sera-Lys McArthur; North of Harbord from director/writer Jeremy Diamond, writers Jamie Michaels, and producers Lisa Baylin and Mike Valiquette; and The Day We Left from director/writer Kaio Kathriner, writer/producer Elma Begovic, and producer Tony Cerciello.

Each team of emerging filmmakers will receive $32,000 towards the production of their short film projects. In addition, The Harold Greenberg Fund is committing $5,000 to each team for the development of the feature film version of the recipient’s project. The total funding being provided through the Shorts-to-Features Program this year is $111,000.

The inaugural selections for the HGF/Newfoundland and Labrador Shorts Program were also announced today, in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC). Launched in October 2019, the initiative is designed to finance short films from Newfoundland and Labrador’s filmmaking community, showcasing creative visions and furthering the careers of writers, producers and directors as they develop their feature-filmmaking skills, says today’s news release.

The two projects selected for the HGF/Newfoundland and Labrador Shorts Program are: Wish You Were Here from writer/director Allison White and producer Kerrie Mattie; and Animal Arrangements from writer/director Kerry Gamberg and producer Micah Martin. Through the program, each project will receive a total of $20,000 in financial contributions from The Harold Greenberg Fund and NLFDC for their short, impactful standalone films.
