Google eyes pay-TV business

Google may be looking to get into the paid television business as early as this year.

According to reports, the company last week filed an application to provide video service to residents of Kansas City, Mo.  Offerings in the video package could include live TV as well as on-demand and on-line access to TV channels, similar to major cable operators.

The potential new service would be in addition to a new high-speed Internet service that the Web giant plans to launch in the area later this year.  Google confirmed earlier this month that it had begun laying fibre-optic cables in Kansas City, Mo., and neighboring Kansas City, Kan., designed to provide Internet service at competitive rates to local residents but at speeds more than 100 times as fast as what is currently available.  Google chose the cities as test markets last year.
