OTTAWA – The CRTC has awarded Golden West Broadcasting Ltd. a license to operate an English-language, commercial FM radio station in Cochrane, AB that will target adults between 25 to 54 years of age with a hybrid Country music format.

The station will operate at 91.5 MHz (channel 218B1) with an average effective radiated power (ERP) of 4,700 watts (maximum ERP of 10,000 watts with an effective height of antenna above average terrain of 118.1 metres).  The licence will expire on August 31, 2025.

The CRTC said Monday that it determined that approval of the application would be in the public interest, noting that the primary service contour for the new station would be limited to Cochrane and its immediate surroundings, and not impact the nearby Calgary radio market.

The Commission also approved Golden West's application to delete the rebroadcasting transmitter CFIT-FM-1 Cochrane from the broadcasting licence for the English-language commercial radio station CFIT-FM Airdrie.

In other radio news from Monday, the CRTC turned down an application by LS telcom Limited, on behalf of Aujourd’hui l’Espoir, for a broadcasting licence to operate a French-language specialty FM radio station (Christian music) in Lachute, Quebec.

The Commission also decided against renewing the broadcasting licence for the French-language community radio station CHOC-FM Saint-Rémi, Quebec, noting that the station ceased operation in August.  Consequently, the current licence will expire on December 31, 2018.

Given that the station has ceased operations and that the licensee has initiated bankruptcy proceedings by filing a declaration of insolvency and transfer and surrender of its assets on 6 September 2018, the Commission is not satisfied that it is in the interest of the broadcasting system to renew the licence for CHOC-FM”, reads the decision.

The CRTC invited interested parties to file an application to obtain a broadcasting licence to operate a radio station to serve the local community of Saint‑Rémi.
