TORONTO – Globalive Wireless placed Canada’s first Advanced Wireless Network (AWS) call Saturday, proving the viability of it’s next generation wireless network.
The AWS band uses microwave frequencies for enhanced voice, mobile data, video, and messaging services.
Globalive says that the exponential growth of data traffic is pushing providers to build all-IP networks, but the challenge of replacing existing equipment means that it could take years before legacy service providers can qualify as all-IP.
"We have the advantage of being all-IP from the get-go," said CEO Ken Campbell, in the announcement. "Reaching this milestone gives us the confidence to report that we are on schedule to meet our network commitments to both our stakeholders and our future customers."
Working towards a launch date of late 2009, Toronto-based Globalive Wireless will provide voice, text and data services to Canadians on a next-generation GSM network.
