OTTAWA – New wireless entrant Globealive Wireless has chosen Ottawa-based DragonWave Inc. to provide its next generation wireless backhaul for its high speed packet access network.
DragonWave is a global supplier of high capacity, wireless native Ethernet backhaul solutions for mobile and access networks.
“After a rigorous search of global suppliers, we selected Canadian network solutions leader DragonWave for its innovative, Ethernet-based alternative to the more expensive leased-line and fibre optic infrastructure favored by legacy carriers”, said Globealive CEO Ken Campbell, in the announcement.
As new IP applications exceed the capacity of existing networks, DragonWave’s made-in-Canada ‘horizon compact’ product allows companies to meet the growing demand for more bandwidth without the expense of building or expanding a fibre backbone, the announcement continued.
Operating in licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies between 6 and 38 GHz, the product delivers “pure packet microwave performance” with software scalable, ultra-low latency transport of up to 1.6 Gbps per link, while delivering carrier-grade (99.999%) interference-free performance in next-generation IP networks.
“We are not only pleased to be making a significant investment in Canadian technology, but also to be creating Canadian jobs in an innovative sector at a time when our country needs them the most,” Campbell continued. “This is exactly in line with Canada’s need to transform itself into a more competitive, knowledge-based economy.”
Working towards a launch date of late 2009, Toronto-based Globalive Wireless plans to provide voice, text and data services to Canadians on a next-generation all IP wireless network.
