Global unveils on-air team for new Mandarin-language newscast

VANCOUVER – Global News has named broadcast veteran Carol Wang and journalist Frank Qi to the on-air team of its new Mandarin-language newscast.

Global National Mandarin will debut Monday (Chinese New Year) on Shaw Multicultural Channel 116 in Vancouver, and on Shaw Multicultural Channel 89 in Calgary.  Going forward, the 30-minute newscast will air Monday through Friday at 7pm and 11:30pm PT in Vancouver and at 10pm in Calgary.

With over 12 years of television anchoring and reporting experience, Wang moved to Vancouver in 2001 where she was a reporter and anchor for Fairchild Media’s Talentvision before hosting OMNI News: Mandarin Edition newscast in 2003.

Qi has over 10 years of experience working with Vancouver-based Chinese media. After graduating with a Master of Journalism from the University of British Columbia, he worked as a reporter and anchor for Fairchild TV in Vancouver before becoming the station’s assignment editor in 2007.

“With Carol and Frank, Global National Mandarin has secured two experienced and well-respected journalists who are very familiar with the Chinese community to help launch this innovative newscast,” said Global News VP Troy Reeb, in the announcement.  “Their keen news sense paired with the resources provided by Global National’s production team will allow Global National Mandarin to put together the most up-to-date Mandarin-language newscast possible.”
