Global News hires Bhupinder Hundal away from CBC Vancouver

VANCOUVER — Global News announced yesterday it has hired Bhupinder Hundal (above) as news director and station manager of Global BC.

Joining the station on December 15, Hundal succeeds Jill Krop who stepped down from the role earlier this fall.

With almost two decades of media experience, Hundal most recently held the position of senior producer of television news for CBC Vancouver. Prior to that role, he founded CrossConnect Media, a consulting company designed to enhance the profile of mainstream news organizations in ethnic communities.

From 2014 to 2018, Hundal was well-known for his contributions to Rogers Media’s Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition on OMNI Television, both on-air and behind the camera. In addition to performing various on-air roles, he is credited with developing the overall strategy key to the program’s success.

Hundal also worked previously as the news manager of OMNI Television in B.C., where he was responsible for overseeing the station’s Mandarin, Cantonese and Punjabi newscasts, including all personnel and bureau operations in Victoria. In addition, he was responsible for the Punjabi National Edition of OMNI News.

“Offering a fresh perspective, extensive experience and great energy, we are thrilled to welcome Bhupinder as the new leader of Global BC,” said Alexandra Henderson, vice-president of local news at Global News, in a press release. “We are excited to see him lead the award-winning Global BC team into the future.”

“As a kid from Port Alberni, I grew up watching BCTV and the News Hour with Tony Parsons,” said Hundal. “It is an honour to now be in a position to lead this incredible team and a station that has meant so much to this province.”
