VANCOUVER – Beginning next year, Global National’s Kevin Newman will be the sole national broadcast TV anchor to be based and broadcast out of Ottawa.
CanWest MediaWorks today announced that commencing in early 2008, a new custom-designed digital newsroom and studio located in the heart of the nation’s capital will house Newman’s broadcasts.
"Putting Newman closer to the day’s biggest stories and biggest newsmakers than any other Anchor, the move will also position him at the forefront of the country’s most advanced newsgathering facility – a multi-million dollar project now being built in Ottawa by CanWest MediaWorks, poised to become Canada’s most integrated broadcast/print/online media centre," says the press release.
The main production and editorial hub for Global National, however, will remain in Vancouver, where new technology will allow the program to not only be hosted from Ottawa nightly, "but to quickly relocate to the scene of breaking news anywhere in the country," says the release. "This new digital infrastructure will also allow Global News to create unique content for any digital platform at any time of the day."
"Today’s announcement marks yet another in a series of innovations for our news operation, and the start of a new mission to expand the presence and enhance the content of Canada’s most-watched national newscast," said Steve Wyatt, senior vice president, news and information television for CanWest MediaWorks.
"I am very excited about this important new leap in our evolution as a newscast," said Newman. "As the only national newscast to be anchored from our country’s capital, we have a unique opportunity to tell stories about Canada and the world in entirely new ways. My closer proximity to all parts of the country – and to the decision makers who impact the lives of all Canadians – will allow Global National to get to the scene of breaking news faster, with context and perspective that’s unique."
The weekend editions of Global National with Tara Nelson will continue to be broadcast from Global’s Vancouver news centre.
